Hi FME'ers,This week's challenger was software developer Paul Nalos, who heads up the database team at Safe. Paul must have been working here for 10 years or more, but does he have the same knowledge of Desktop functionality - or the same luck at answering bizarre questions - as you do?!First let's see the correct answers...Answers1) Which of these is NOT an option on the Tools menu in Workbench?Browse FME HubBrowse Coordinate SystemsBrowse Readers and WritersBrowse Web ConnectionsBrowse Geographic TransformationsThis is simple question because you can just look in Workbench. Paul didn't have that luxury. He would know about the coordinate systems and geographic transformations because that's part of his team's responsibilities. I think for him it came down to either the Hub or Web Connections. A 50:50 call, and he picked the wrong one:So, the answer is Browse Web Connections. I guess it's not really necessary; you can just use Tools > FME Options > We
It's the third quiz for January 2020, and the Safer you are up against this time is Paul Nalos. Paul is one of our senior developers and heads up our database team. That team is responsible for not just all database development, but also CAD formats, and coordinate systems and reprojection! That's a lot of complex topics to master if you want to join their team.As usual, the quiz link is: https://demos-safe-software.fmecloud.com/fmeserver/apps/FMEQuizFortunately for you, I didn't put any database, CAD, or coordinate system questions in there! And remember that Paul wasn't allowed to look up answers, but you are; so you have the advantage there. So try out the quiz for this week, and see if you can beat Paul.
Hello FME'ers,I have a question-of-the-week today that's really more philosophical than technical; I'll lay out my opinion on the matter and bring in other thoughts from the answers to the question.Question of the WeekQ) Can a person who has never worked on FME, be tasked with migrating data from GE SmallWorld to PostGIS? Should we engage FME Certified Partners or can we learn this along the way? Asked here by @navraj28 A) Well, that's a fairly loaded question to answer when my role includes providing materials to bring new users up to speed. Plus the question was short on details making the quick answer... it depends! Let's look at some of the factors I'd use to make a decision...ResourcesPersonally I do think it's possible to dive right into a project when you first start FME. We have a lot of resources in the form of documentation, tutorials, knowledge-base articles, training, webinars, technical support, blogs, events, and conferences (did I miss anythin

Hi FME'ers,This week's challenger was my colleague in the Tech Experts team at Safe, Andrea Eisma. Interestingly I also asked the questions on the FME Community webinar, so we have those results too!Let's see the correct answers...Answers1) The F11 shortcut in Workbench: what does it do?Enters "Full Screen" modeOpens an FME Hub browserRe-publishes the workspace to FME ServerCloses the workspace without saving changesToggle BreakpointsThis should have been simple. Just open Workbench and try it. It will enter Full Screen mode.Did you know there is an online PDF of FME shortcuts that you can download and print out? Me neither. In this case it would tell you that F11 maximizes the canvas to full screen. If you want to keep the title and status bars, then Shift + F11 simply maximizes the canvas size, keeping those elements. As for the other answers:The FME Hub browser doesn't have a shortcut key (use Tools > Browse FME Hub or select Alt+T, Alt+H, Enter if you ar
We have 12 engines in our FME server. I can see engine9 and engine9@39899, thus having 13 engines. What is this?
It's the second quiz for January, and this time you are up against my colleague Andrea Eisma. Andrea is a team lead for the FME Desktop tech experts team, which means she basically runs one of the support teams at Safe. You may have interacted with her through our support channels, and would likely meet Andrea in real life if you attend an FME World Tour stop in either Washington, DC; Springfield, MA; Toronto, ON; Ottawa, ON; Halifax, NS; Winnipeg, MB; or Regina, SK.Whew! That's a lot of travel you've got lined up Andrea! As usual, the quiz link is: https://demos-safe-software.fmecloud.com/fmeserver/apps/FMEQuizI think this is going to be an easier week, but then I know the answers so I would think that. Remember the rules say that Andrea isn't allowed to look up answers, but you are; so you have the advantage there. So go for it, and see if you can beat Andrea.
Hey folks,Happy new year to you all. I wish you all an exceptional - and FME-filled - 2020.So... the weekly quiz is back! The first one this year pits you up against Safer Kris Majury. Kris works with the technical publications team, and is responsible for most of our transformer documentation. Like me, she works out of her home office, in her case somewhere in the islands off the coast of British Columbia. As usual, the quiz link is: https://demos-safe-software.fmecloud.com/fmeserver/apps/FMEQuizKris put up a good score, but then I never really know how hard the questions will be. Remember the rules say that she isn't allowed to look up answers, but you are; so you have the advantage there. So have at it, and see if you can beat Kris.
Hello friends,It's a new year but there's still unfinished business from the old one: it's the results of the 2019 Holiday Hackathon. As noted before, I scaled it back a bit this time, so entrants were in it for the fun and what little glory they get from this post! But that didn't stop us getting six fantastic entries. So without further ado, I announce that the winner is: National Hockey Ligue Visualizer by @philippebSecond place was the Holiday Lights project by @gazza and then everyone else was close enough together to call them joint third place.Well done everyone. I awarded you all the Hackathon badge and when I get some more tangible rewards, you're on my list! But I hope that most of all you'll bask in the respect and admiration of your FME peers, because these were some seriously good projects. Kudos to everyone who took part. And to everyone else on the forum, happy new year to you all and here's to some great FMEing in 2020!
Hi, I have an issue with a workspace that reads from AGOL and, among other things, writes to an SDE. The workspace completes successfully, but then returns an error – as below: Translation was SUCCESSFULError running translation. This isn’t so much of an issue on desktop – as the features are written correctly, but on Server (it’s destined to be a nightly scheduled task) that final error is enough to restart the workspace – ad infinitum. I have narrowed the issue down to the SDE Writer and have tried many ‘solutions’, without success. These include:Replacing the SDE Writer with a Feature WriterConverting the SDE Feature Class to non-relationalCommitting transactions at the end of writeVarious transaction typesAudit logging (no additional details on the final error)etc Currently running FME Desktop 2018.1.2.1 (32bit) on Windows 7. Any help and advice would be welcome. Thanks,Mark
Hi!I have a collection of feature classes and I want to put them together in a single feature class. I was wondering if anyone is familiar with this scenario, or if anyone knows the transformer they would have to use to carry out this process?Or it is necessary to use a transformer or simplement I can connect the features classes in "reader" and the feature classe created in "writer"Thanks a lot
I'm sure this is an easy fix, but I have a workspace that is being run by WorkspaceRunner. A different shapefile is reading in from the runner each time using the Path Reader. When I run the WorkspaceRunner the child workspace is not running. I have used this setup before and it's worked perfectly. I can't figure out why it's not on this occasion. I've attached both workspaces. Thanks for any help. B
Dear FME community. I try to merge multiple lines attributes for use an Emailer at the end (like an object) like that :I tried aggregator, HTMLextractor, AttributeCreator but the result is not good.Have you got any idea ?Thanks.

HiIm unable to convert Obj to gltf in the latest update.I have downloaded some sample obj files from this site.Im always getting this warning Geometries which cannot be converted to a triangulated mesh will not be written. How to avoid this and achieve the conversion. In the previous versions of fme im able to convert these obj files but now its not working. What is the reason. Some sample file https://free3d.com/3d-model/alien-ship-from-battleship-37326.html which i used. Most of the obj im converting getting this error.Previous version this issue was not there.FME version : FME(R) 2019.1.0.0 (20190710 - Build 19608 - WIN64 ).OS : windows 10.
For some reason my "Translation log" view is floating instead of fixed. Don't know how to "fix" it again (FME2018).
Hi FME'ers,It's that time of year for a hackathon! Yay! But first be aware...NoteWe are scaling back a little this time. I gave the marketing team permission to use the "12 Days of FME" title for something else, we'll have a bit less fanfare (no blog posts), and prizes will be restricted to what I can steal from the swag cupboard the next time I'm in Safe's head office (which might be nothing if I'm spotted). So no fame or fortune, and not much glory: but hopefully a lot of fun and satisfaction in doing cool things with FME.Theme and RulesRather than restrict us to a theme, I thought we'd go with an open competition. So, as in the past, you can submit any sort of project you like.It can be a workspace, a custom transformer, a web service, or anything as long as FME is used in part of it.It can be Christmas-related, or related to any other holiday you can think of; or neither. You can treat it as a "hackathon for good" where you try to solve
Seasons greetings, FMEers. Our main question this week comes from our support queue and relates to published parameters used programmatically.Note: I have an up-to-date list of previous Question of the Week topics in case it's of interest to you.Question of the WeekQ) The behavior of choice with alias parameters on FME Server does not seem to be working as expected when called programmatically. Values are taken literally and not converted. Can you please confirm how it should work?A) Of course. It might seem odd, but I believe this is actually working as designed. The difference is in running a workspace through FME (Desktop or Server) and running it programmatically. Let's see why...Choice with Alias ParametersHere's a quick refresher on user parameters in general and the Choice with Alias type in particular.A User Parameter is a way to get input from a user when they run a workspace. They are sometimes also called Published Parameters, since you publish them to get user input, or keep
We are trying to install FME 2019 server. After the installation was completed, we tried to trigger one job from the samples repository. However it is giving the following error:There was an error submitting the job. COM.safe.fmeserver.api.FMEServerException: java.sql.SQLException: Key not found in configuration table: pause_queue_incoming. Please help.
Hi, The AreaAmalgamator does not seem to work in FME2019, when I use the same data and workspace in FME2017 it works fine. Even when there is no data passing the AreaAmalgamator it makes the workspace crash, when I use a dummy polygon input to the AreaAmalgamator in the same workspace it works. I have this problem on Workbench and Server 2019. Thanks for any help:) Best/ Johan
OK folks. This will likely be the last quiz of the year (I'll be on vacation for a while), so do your best to beat the Safer I have lined up today: Craig Vernon. If you don't know Craig, he's in charge of Safe's sales group and is also the ultimate head person for our support teams. Basically he's responsible for customer satisfaction, so I hope his score today isn't too dissatisfying for you! His isn't a technical role, so you may have some advantage over him there! As always, the URL is: https://demos-safe-software.fmecloud.com/fmeserver/apps/FMEQuizHave fun, and don't forget to also take part in the FME Holiday Hackathon if you get the chance.Mark
Hi FME'ers,This question was asked about Excel data, but it often applies to any text-based format where a set of records is subdivided by a separate header record. In this scenario, the header record gets read as a standard feature by FME. It needs not just to be filtered out, but its contents added to adjacent records.Question of the WeekQ) I am trying to use FME to get some excel data formatted. The problem is there are headers which I need to populate as a column. I tried using the VariableSetter but it gives me the same header all the way through for all the lines. https://knowledge.safe.com/questions/104160/variable-setter.htmlA) Workflows - or the flow of features through a workspace - is an aspect of FME that is important for keen workspace authors to be aware of. In fact I recently wrote a post on feature order for 2019.2. Why does this apply here? It's because the user wants to pass information from one feature to another, not using a common attribute value, but on the basis
Hi FME'ers,Well, here are the quiz answers for this week. I think Don posed more of a challenge than Dale did last week. You would have needed a perfect score to beat him. Did you do that?First, the answers...Answers1) What is the name of the site for publishing and sharing FME functionality such as templates, transformers, and web services?FME User CentralFME OnlineThe FME StoreThe FME HubFMEpediaIt's the FME Hub:At one time it did used to be called The FME Store, and this community itself has been called FMEpedia and FME User Central at one time (in fact fmeusercentral.com and fmepedia.com will both lead you to this site).FME Online sounds like fun, but has never been a thing, as far as I'm aware.Don's Answer: The FME Hub (Correct) 2) Which of these actors is the odd one out?Eric BanaArnold SchwarzeneggerPeter O'TooleTim RobbinsAnne HathawayDon's Answer: Anne Hathaway (Correct) I know Don is a bit of a movie buff, but I think this one was a pure guess on his p
Hi FME'ers,The FME Weekly Quiz is now open (sorry for the delay). This week is the same as last: your goal is to beat just one person. Last week you beat co-founder Dale Lutz. This week you're trying to beat Safe's president and other co-founder, Don Murray!I thought the questions were still hard, but Don managed a pretty good score, even without Googling the answers. I think you'll have to all work pretty hard to beat him, both individually and as a group!https://demos-safe-software.fmecloud.com/fmeserver/apps/FMEQuizSo give it a go and see if you can beat Don!
