I would like to be able to use thematic mapping in Data Inspector so I can inspect the values of different columns in raw data before I run translations. That would help me to find what data is relevant to the raw data I receive from our clients and would help me to answer my own questions of how I am going to transform the data by looking at how it looks spatially. I'm typically looking at multiple columns and unknown values in raw data.

I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but I've had a lot of success using QGIS for this. It's open source, reads a lot of formats (unfortunately not ffs ;-) and is really fast.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that's a great idea. I usually do thematic mapping in MapInfo. But using QGIS would take out the step of transformation for me which would make it quicker to look at raw data. I've used QGIS a little bit.
I'd like to do this in Inspector as well, because there are times when I've made some tweaks and I'm already looking at the data there. If Inspector had that capability, I wouldn't have to go back to my translation and make more tweaks. Also I wouldn't need to open another program. It's part laziness... erm... efficiency on my part. To me, it's the greatest weakness of Inspector.

To be clear, @bruttino, you'd like to select a few columns and then have us assign colors based on the unique values for those?

This is a great idea. I think in most cases thematizing on one column would suffice.
