Hi @robingriffith thanks for your interest in the Autodesk ReCap format. At the moment we only have a ReCap Writer available in FME.

We do not currently have a ReCap Reader in FME. However, we are looking at doing a full overhaul of the ReCap Writer alongside which we're looking at creating a ReCap Reader. I've updated our internal ticket tracking this update to add a comment here if the Reader is added to a release of FME. For your reference the ticket number is FMEENGINE-57472

Hi Dan,

Thanks for your answer. It never occurred to me that there would be a writer, but not a reader.

Doesn't seem logic that a problem can write output in a specific format, but can't read that same format at the same time.

Part of the reason why i'm looking at FME is because Autodesk Recap is utterly slow in exporting files. I was hoping to bypass Recap and convert RCS to wider used formats like LAS in an different way. See also:

Hey @robingriffith typically we do release both a Reader and a Writer, but in some cases we only have a Reader or Writer and not both. Sometimes the support for formats is limited by the external libraries we use when it comes to creating both a Reader and a Writer. In this case updated libraries have recently been released so we're working to implement a new Reader and an updated Writer.

I understand your confusion so hopefully that clears things up!

I've also updated the ticket with your comments since that helps give us some context behind your need for the ReCap Reader. Let me know if you have any other questions.
