Question

Hi, I am having a problem where LAZ is not being read.

Reading laz from Local / Network drive throws error: LAS reader: Failed to open file for reading. Please ensure that the file exists and you have sufficient privileges to read it.

Any ideas why this happens?

Hello @sujitbhunia, interesting. I have a few additional questions if you don’t mind!

  • What version and build of FME Form are you currently using? (Help > About FME Workbench)
  • Is there any other related messaging in the logfile that may be helpful? (eg. warnings, or errors).
  • Are you able to read or open the same file successfully in a different application? (eg. is this a purely FME issue or are other applications also unable to read the file?)
  • Are you able to share a sample LAZ file here for testing?

Happy to help, Kailin.

Hi @sujitbhunia,

Thnaks for posting!
Here’s some articles that may help with the issue:

Here are some troubleshooting steps that may help:

  • Test opening the file in another program.
  • Copy the file to your local machine and try again.
  • Check the FME log for addtional error messages.

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks @kailinatsafe for your answer

  • I am using FME version 2021 64 bit.
  • If I download the LAZ files from Azure storage to my local drive, I can read the files but it takes up more storage and takes longer to execute.
  • When trying to read Laz files from Azure storage using files path then it throws error "LAS reader: Failed to open file 'https://storageaccountName.blob.core.windows.net/pointcloud/LAZ/abc_laz_20190101.laz/abc_laz_20190101.laz' for reading.  Please ensure that the file exists and you have sufficient privileges to read it”.

Hi @donalmateer  Thanks for your suggestion

  • If I copy the LAZ files from Azure storage to my local drive, then I can read the files but it takes up more storage and takes longer to execute.
  • But problems arise when reading laz data directly from Azure Storage.

Hi @sujitbhunia!

Thanks for the responses!

Here’s a suggestion that may resolve the issue.
It looks likt you’ll need to authenticate (read) through WaaFS.

Dataset drop down > Read File From Web > select appropriate azure storage.

Let me know if this helps!

Hi @donalmateer Thanks for your suggestion

If I use "Dataset drop down > Read File From Web > select appropriate azure storage", there is an option to select only one file at a time but I have a folder that has more files to read.
If I select 1 file it works fine, but I am unable to select multiple folders.

Hi @sujitbhunia,

Thanks for comment! Have you tried using either the AzureBlobStorageConnector or AzureFileStorageConnector. This may help with the issue of only selecting one file!
Let me know if this helps! I’m going to recreated on my end and see if I can find a solution!

Thanks!

Thanks @donalmateer ,

using AzureBlobStorageConnector we can only download/Upload files but there is no option to read files from Azure.

Thanks!

Hi @sujitbhunia, after further investigation unfrotunately it’s only possible to select one folder at a time. Using the LAS reader you can select multiple files when they’re on your local drive but unfortunately you can only select one folder at a time if ‘selecting a file from the web’.
