Background map enhancements for Data Inspector

Adding a background map

Adding a background map could be done straight in the Data Inspector main UI. Now it's a bit tedious to go to Tools > FME Options and set the background map there.

Multiple background maps

At the moment, you can have only 1 background map at a time in Data Inspector. There should be a possibility to add several background maps to the same view.

Background map opacity

Now background maps are lacking opacity control.

Save background map for later use

When you change your background map settings, the previous background map is gone. It should be possible to save the settings in the same way you can do for Database Connections.

These problems occurred, when I was setting a WMS background map. I changed it later to a different background map, but wanted to go back to the WMS background map. I had to set all the WMS parameters again.

Great great ideas. I've passed them onto the team.

They advise:

- Background map opacity: BUG 61315 (Status: In progress)

- Adding a background map and Save background map for later use: BUG 56391 (Using the concept of named connections) (Status: 2017.0)

- Multiple background maps: BUG 50639 (Status: Planned)

It is a great suggestion, and now the operation of the background map is not very convenient.

If I open the background map function, then no matter I view any data, the background map will show. This causes the display speed to slow down.As geolassi has said, if I want to close the background map, I have to go to the FME Options menu. It's rather cumbersome to switch. So I don't usually use this feature.

If similar ArcGIS establish a base group layer, allows users to add multiple background map layers to the below, and use the checkbox to control the display of each map layer, may be more easy to use.

Thank you Dale! I'm using background maps a lot, and functionality for saving the background map is what Data Inspector needs most :).

Upvoting this instead of making a new idea entry.

Saving the service credentials would be really nice!

Update: FME 2016.1 and higher have the ability to set background map opacity. This can be set in a similar way as the feature drawing style.

Please make it possible to set the background map from workbench. I run quite a few translations with different rasters or vectors as background. Changing the background to the corresponding image or vector is annoying.

For instance by making a background map setter transformer that overrules the default background that set in DI. This would save reading the background in the workspace and sending it to its own inspector. The transformer could be set by attribute value or user parameter and thus storing it as a workspace specific background.

This Idea has been partially implemented in FME 2019.0. It is now possible to save Background Maps, change Background Maps, and add new Background Maps from the main Data Inspector UI.

Please note that this is a beta feature and its functionality and appearance are subject to change as the product continues to evolve before the official release.
