Hi all! Welcome to our March FME Community User Spotlight. Every month, we spotlight a user in the community whose active participation and helpful contributions have been invaluable. We’re excited to highlight their experiences and insights!
User Spotlight: Carl Von Stetten / @cfvonner
What company do you currently work for?
Central San (Central Contra Costa Sanitary District in Martinez, California)
What’s your current job role and title?
Lead GIS Analyst
Tell us more about what you do and how you use FME?
I design, implement, and maintain our various Enterprise geodatabases for wastewater collection and treatment. FME has played a key role in every GIS platform migration or upgrade. For the past several years, I've been using FME to create integrations between ArcGIS, Cityworks Asset Management, Oracle ERP, Oracle Permitting, SCADA, and other business systems.
Why did you join the FME Community?
Originally, it was to get help when I was stuck on something. Now spend more time trying to help others and keeping up with what's new.
What tips do you have for users on how to get the most out of the FME Community?
Ask good questions - be clear, concise, and explain what you have tried already. Read other users' questions too - I learn a lot from what others are trying to do.
Tell us about some of the exciting use cases you've built using FME.
We migrated two of our large datasets to new ArcGIS Enterprise Utility Network and Parcel Fabric data models. Many of our connected business systems need significant reconfiguration to be able to work with these more advanced data models. I am using FME Flow to backport the newer Utility Network and Parcel Fabric data into the old schema and enrich it with information from various Enterprise business systems. This allows us to continue using those legacy web services until all the connected systems can be updated.
I have a few FME Flow automations that pull data from our SCADA system and inject it into Cityworks (to generate runtime-based work orders) and into ArcGIS hosted feature layers to power ArcGIS Enterprise dashboards.
What's one of your favourite tips or tricks for using FME?
Feature caching is probably my favorite feature. Being able to examine a data stream after each transformer to verify the results and identify the outliers saves me so much time and effort!
If you were stranded on an island and could only bring three things with you, what would they be?
An FME spork (of course), a good wide-brimmed hat, and fishing gear
If you could work from anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Pacific Northwest, USA
