visual preview dissapears

Hi,

Another small but annoying problem is that when I put the visual preview on a different screen and I accidentally close it with the cross, I cannot retrieve it in any way, the checkmark remains under views, windows next to it. The only way to get it back is to save and close the workspace and then reopen it . De window then appears in miniature somewhere at the top.

Are there still people having this?

Nathalie

Hi @nath

You can enable / disable in View -> Windows -> Visual Preview:

Thanks,

Danilo

Yes, ik know, that's what i ment by "the checkmark remains under views, windows next to it". It doesn't matter if i enable/disable it. It doesn't change.

Could you share a print your FME Workbench?

No, that's what i would expect. The only thing that changes is when i click at the output port, the green magnifier turns into an eye but no visual preview.

Hi @nath,

I have been able to reproduce the issue on the latest FME 2019.1 beta WIN so I have filed issue FMEDESKTOP-9107 to have this addressed.

I will update this answer once there is a resolution. Also please could you let me know what build are you using?

Thx!

@hollyatsafe

This is what I am getting in FME 2019.1.0.0 (19608, 64-bit). I also have 2018.1.0.1 (18528, 32-bit and 64-bit) installed on the same machine (Windows Server 2012 R2 DataCenter) if that makes any difference.

I’ve discovered there are many ways of organising the different windows. The Visual Preview and Translation log can be docked together so that each appears as a separate tab. Or they can be docked side by side. Or they can be un-docked but tabbed in the same window. Or they can be un-docked and in the same window but side by side. Or they can be un-docked but in separate windows. Or one can be docked and the other un-docked.

The problem occurs for me when I un-dock the "Visual Preview" after the first run, but leave the Translation Log docked. If I close the Visual Preview window, then re-run the translation, the Visual Preview window does not appear. In View > Windows however it is ticked. Clicking on "Visual Preview" in View > Windows does not change anything: It stays ticked, and the window does not appear.

Also, sometimes there is a green magnifying glass icon at the top left of my Inspector, but clicking it does nothing except make the icon disappear.

If I un-dock both the Translation Log AND the Visual Preview, then the problem does not happen – there are tabs for each thing at the bottom of the un-docked Window.

However once the above problem has occurred, The Visual Preview does not come back if I un-dock the Translation Log window and try re-running the translation.

With the Visual Preview window gone, FME crashed on me when I tried to right-click on a Reader Feature Type and do “View Source Data”. When I selected “Debug”, unfortunately all I got was this:

Some FME Window display/positioning permutations...

Docked, tabbed:

Docked, side by side:

Un-docked, tabbed:

Un-docked, side by side:

Hi @tim_wood,

Thank you for sharing your insight into the issue. I have added your comments to the existing bug.

Re the green magnifying glass icon on the Inspector, this will only be present if 'Toggle Automatic Inspect on Selection' is off in Visual Preview:

All this means is that rather than simply clicking anywhere on a transformer for the cached features to be displayed in Visual Preview/DI you have to specifically select this 'inspect' icon. Therefore clicking on this button should simply open the contents of the Inspector in Visual Preview. I'm concerned that when you click on this button, you say it just disappears? Is this the case if you select it on any transformer?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce this. Have I correctly understood the problem?

@danilo_fme That doesn't always work. I lose the Visual Preview window and the option to turn it off and on via the Windows menu doesn't work. I can't untick it.

All this worked better in 2018 when we had the inspector on on-demand rather than this mess of dockable windows :)
