My version is FME 2017
Without any prior transformers GroupBy option in StatisticsCalculator is showing fme_feature_type attribute. Whether "Group By" option in StatisticsCalculator has been auto enabled by fme_feature_type attribute.

I think that's "just how it is", rather than an error. All the group by parameters of unconnected transformers that I looked at show fme_feature_type, because once you connect it that attribute is pretty much guaranteed to be there.
The attribute is not selected so it's not actually doing anything anyway.
