Layer file in ArcMap is sourced with a shapefile created in a workbench. data is coming from a sourced spreadsheet in Excel. The layer does not update when the spreadsheet data is changed. I noticed that a lock file is present in the folder structure for the specific shapefile sourcing the Layer. I have not run into this before and I am not sure if there is a specific setting in FME options that I am missing. Thanks.

Are you working in the Data Interoperability tool within ArcMap? I'm not 100% sure on the shapefile, but I do believe it's expected for the excel file to lock while it's still opened and being edited, so it won't update the workspace immediately after a change in the excel file. I believe you might need to save abd close the excel sheet and update the reader in your workspace for changes to show. You can do that by right clicking on the reader in the Navigator and selecting Update Reader.
