Can't add Esri basemap as Background Map

I currently have the older Esri ArcGIS Online web connector and the new one configured. FME 2025.1.3.

When I try to create a new background map, I only see the older web connection as an options for Esri AGOL maps. Is that expected?

When I use it (and I’ve confirmed that I’m authenticated correctly by testing in a feature reader first) and try to browse to maps I get the following

2026-02-09 16:14:37|      |     |ERROR |FME Objects Worker [28108] > Failed to read features using the 'ARCGISONLINE' reader

Any tips?

I can replicate this issue. It seems that the Background Maps doesnt support the updated Esri AGOL reader. (v2025.2.1)

Hi @jakethepainter,

Thank you for posting your question on the FME Community!

Yes, in 2025.1.x this is expected. Background Maps currently only supports the “Esri ArcGIS Online” web connection. Fortunately, accessing ArcGIS Online background maps using the newer packaged safe.esri-agol connections is coming in FME 2026.1!

Just to confirm, since you're seeing a failure with reading in the AGOL background map, are you using the "Esri ArcGIS Online" web connection?

If it still fails, sharing any additional log messages if there are any would help narrow the issue down. If you'd like, you can also submit a ticket so that our support team can look into this further.

Thanks!
