AEC Objects in FME

Hi! I’m trying to read dwg files containing AEC objects and have found that the Civil 3D reader should be the one to use for this purpose. With this reader, I manage to read features but they are just a proxy of the correct objects that I’m trying to read.

Is there an automated solution for this in FME (some parameter that I’m missing?) or do I have to save the model in a separate dwg file as described in this post (8 years ago) before I can read all objects correctly in FME?

Thanks!

Hi @fannyi,

Thank you for posting your question on the FME Community, and apologies for the delayed response.

I believe we generally read proxy entities as graphical representations for unsupported objects in the Civil 3D reader. It’s likely that the AEC objects you’re working with aren’t currently supported by the Civil 3D reader or your version of FME.

You can find a list of supported and unsupported Civil 3D object types in the Civil 3D reader documentation under Supported Geometries → Categories of Objects. Here’s the documentation page for the latest version of FME Form (2025): https://docs.safe.com/fme/html/FME-Form-Documentation/FME-ReadersWriters/civil3d/civil3d.htm.

If you’d like us to take a closer look at your specific data, you’re very welcome to submit a support case. When doing so, it would be helpful to include:

  • A small sample of the DWG data
  • The version of FME you’re using
  • Which AEC objects are coming through as proxy entities, and what do you expect them to be read as instead

With that information, we can confirm whether this is a current limitation, supported in a newer FME version, or something that may need to be logged as an enhancement. Hope that helps!
