(Even) ESRI provide a cheap option for folk to have GIS at home for private use. It would be wonderful if Safe would consider doing the same for us FMEers.

I am trying to prototype a solution for work, one that outputs a PDF. Maybe placing a big watermark on the output? With such a large toolbox, I think it will be a challenge to create a "Home Use" variant by selectively disabling certain transformers/readers/writers?

Note: ESRI Canada charge a small amount for Home Use ($150 CDN), http://www.esri.ca/en/content/arcgis-home-use-program-request, would expect the same from safe software.
would be interesting if this was available - learnt a lot using the ESRI home use program due to being a newer version with more extensions than available at work.
I think it is a good idea. Both parties can benefit - users to learn about the software they might not have access to or is outdated at work and Safe Software will only build a bigger customer base without really losing any money since this is intended for home not commercial use. Nowadays, not only ESRI but as well Microsoft and other software companies are offering this either completely free or for a small fee. See for example MS Visual Studio Community. For a small fee I would definitely consider it.
I think this is a great idea. I've been wanting to be able to explore some of the additional transformers and readers/writers that I don't get to use in my day to day job. Looking forward to see what eventuates here.
I totally agree with a Home Use License as this would help many learn how to use the product... Even those who know, could at least build/fix/debug work scripts from home. I think a free license could perhaps have some constraints (not all readers/writers) or possibly a limited number of records or by data size? Could even be a writer only type limitation, so xls may be smaller than say PostGIS and limit processing to X. Perhaps lic via an FME site and force logging of use.
Another option would be allow fmeworkbench to run without a license (no engine) and users could post to the cloud or users site to be able to run(via VM or FMEserver). VM may be required to see inspector output... This would even allow someone to say email me a fmw, I edit and fix and email back without need a lic. Of course I couldn't test if I don't have an engine. This option also allows home user to get some-what familiar with product off-time.
Just some ideas.
I have home use Microsoft Office and ArcGIS and I would definitely pay a similar amount to what I pay for an ArcGIS home use licence for an FME desktop home use licence. As already mentioned it allows people to learn and also more experienced users to experiment and develop out-of-hours, and I think it would actually promote FME and make Safe money.

Apart from working on it out of office, FME is great to quickly put together ad-hoc data transformation tasks and in is really impressive when you do it in a team.
It would be nice to take it to a meeting or conference out of office and be able to demonstrate on it.
As it is not for production, restrictions on resources (eg: number of cores and memory like in case of SQL Server Express and Oracle XE) is quite acceptable.

+10Providing completely free of cost license should be at the sole discretion of Safe Software on a case to case basis and as suggested by @mapperz there should be a nominal fee for home license as support cost to fund completely free home licenses
