I find a free online ocr , supports 40+ languages, can convert image to plain txt file and searchable pdf document.

I've been asked if FME can read PDF twice this year... Not much I admit, but there is at least a niche demand, and lets face it, some of what FME can do is quite niche... (I lay before you the "SecondOrderConformer" for example.)

This is a frequently asked question at the FME basic training. Can FME read PDF? So it would be a nice addition.

Text PDFs, Image PDFs, Vector Map PDFs, or... all of the above?

If it could start by processing text and numbers for a start that would be great.

 

One application would be to send a geotagged image of some text and email it to FME Server to store the data as a point and attributes (i.e in PostGIS). Thanks.

My PDF reader wishlist would probably be:

  1. Read GeoPDFs, including attributes
  2. Read rasters from standard PDFs
  3. Read vectors from map PDFs, including layering
  4. Read in text fields and do something with them
  5. Compare a scanned PDF with an original and extract the difference
  6. Do some kind of magic that turns the whole thing back into usable data

I'm not too excited by the idea of text recognition - maybe that could come later?

I have a geopdf file, in fact a quite beautiful map, And I need to extract (and further process in FME) the individual map layers inside it. It may be niche, but ok, count me in... My wishlist for a PDF reader definitely comprise 1-3 of rollo's list. A pdf reader would have saved me a lot of time today!

Hi everyone, the FME 2018 betas now have a PDF Reader. Be sure to test out the latest beta and starting reading in your PDFs!

 

 

I'll switch over this idea since most of the comments here are more to do with the PDF Reader than the OCR transformer.
