Never hit the Gear button again. When you select a transformer, its parameters get shown and you can edit them right away. Maybe an APPLY button to make them take effect. Should reduce clicking.

Check it out in FME 2017 betas. You need to turn on the modeless parameter dialog first by visiting View->Windows->Selected Object Properties (we're open to a better name than that). Still being refined but do try it out and give us your feedback.

I found that the "Selected Item Properties" window has been added in FME 2017 beta build 17150. Selected transformer parameters or bookmark properties can be edited through this window.

Thanks for the great enhancement, I'll always use it!

I think it would be further better if the reader/writer feature type properties, reader/writer parameters, published/private/FME Server parameters, workspace/transformer parameters, output/input port properties (custom transformer) etc... everything could also be edited with the "Selected Item Properties" window.

The Workspace/Transformer Properties may also be integrated to this new window.

When you change item selection after editing parameters in the window, the edited parameters seem to be applied automatically even if you didn't click the 'Apply' button. I don't know whether it's good for every user.

Perhaps it might be better if Workbench could show a Yes/No/Cancel message box if a parameter has been edited, when the user is going to change item selection without clicking the 'Apply' or 'Reset' button. e.g.

"Parameters have been edited. Do you want to apply them?"

- Yes: apply the parameters, and change item selection.

- No: reset the parameters, and change item selection.

- Cancel: cancel item selection change, and continue editing the current item parameters.

However, there could also be users who feel the message is annoying, so it would be further better if the user could change the behavior through the FME Options.

- Prompt when changing item selection if edit has not been applied.

or

- Apply edit automatically without prompt.

Hi @daleatsafe and everyone, how do you think about the arrangement of buttons in the Selected Item Properties? - FME 2017.0 Beta build 17171

  • Parameters Dialog Box: | Help | Defaults | <space> | OK | Cancel |
  • Selected Item Properties: | Help | <space> | Defaults | Reset | Apply (equivalent to OK) |

Very good feedback @takashi . We did at first have a dialog similar to what you suggest here but did find it too annoying. We really do not think anyone would want this.

We also plan to expand the selected item properties as per your ideas above as well. Thanks!
