Hey guys,

The map info extended writers write speeds are excruciatingly slow. It is taking nearly 2 days to write 2 million features.

This is to the point where I have written a mapbasic script at the end to convert a mid/mif to mapinfo extended rather than writing to mapinfo extended in FME. This is a pretty ugly thing to do.

Regards,

James

Hi @jamesleversha, which version of FME are you using? In FME 2017.1 we made improvements to the writer to better performance using feature table technology.

Hi @TiaAtSafe, Using 2018.0.1.0 Version 18310. For a comparrision, it takes me around 1-2 hours to write the MID/MIF from FME, then about another hour for MapInfo to convert this to Native X, compared to the 2+ days it takes for the MapInfo Extended Writer in FME, there is significant change. I am writing dynamically to this writer, and haven't tested writing statically. Is FME committing each feature to the file rather than doing bulk inserts?

Cheers,

James

@jamesleversha We are looking at whether we can improve the performance of the MapInfo Extended TAB writer. Our investigations show that the bottleneck lies in the MapInfo EFAL API that we have to use.

I'm wondering if there are any plans to look at this in the future? as in FME 2018:1 it is still very slow writing MapInfo Extended.

We know the issue is as a result of the API we use, and we also have hope that a newer version of that API will solve this. Too early to make any promise yet though.
