This is now in FME 2017 betas. You can hit Shift-Control-C to toggle between the various options (shortest-path [the only old way] / manhattan / curvey). Let us know what you think.

Everybody knows if you take data round sharp corners you'll break it, but going curvy may be going too far the other way.
