This idea is a follow up on the following question I posted on the FME community; 'Paste as Text' option for Copy-Pasting to Annotations in Workbench

Personally I prefer to have the option to paste content in plain text to (Annotations) in Workbench.

When using ctrl-v (as I am used to), the original formatting is preserved.

redgeographics pointed out to me that Pasting via right-click -> paste strips the formatting.

Although I'm glad there is an option to paste as plain text (without formatting), it's not clear if it is designed to work like this. Also I believe that the current implementation is not so intuitive.

Therefore, the core of this idea is to improve the (user experience) upon using different 'paste as' options for (annotations in) Workbench.

Some idea's;

  • Within the FME Workbench options, add a default 'Paste as' behavior when using ctrl-v for pasting to workbench.
  • Expand the right-click menu, and split the current 'Paste' option into two new options; 'Paste as Plain Text' and 'Paste as formatted Text'.

@thijsknapen Thanks for posting this idea! It's being tracked internally via FMEFORM-5341.

I haven't tried this, but does CTRL-SHFT-V do a paste without formatting? That's a standard within Microsoft apps.

Sadly, no. :^( That's the request of FMEFORM-5341

OK. Just to be clear, FMEFORM-5341 covers both the right-click context menu having "Paste" and "Paste Unformatted" (or somthing like that) as well as support for CTRL-SHFT-V doing the "Paste Unformatted"?

I think FMEFORM-5341 needs clarification too. Currently we know that CTRL-V will paste with formatting, CTRL-SHIFT-V does nothing, and right-click "Paste" will paste without formatting. The right-click context menu should have options to paste with and without formatting, and CTRL-SHIFT-V should paste without formatting.

Also, CTRL-V in Windows will add its own background to the pasted text which can't be changed easily. The text background is black or white depending if the source is in dark or light mode. This is also the case for Mac, but not Linux.

Lastly, when testing this with Linux on Windows (Windows 11/WSL2/Ubuntu 22.04) CTRL-V will paste the text unformatted.
