Part of the "BuildingSmart IFC for Infrastructure Project" the IFC Alignment extension includes Road Rail and Bridges.

http://www.buildingsmart-tech.org/infrastructure/projects/alignment

The Idea is to extend the FME IFC reader/writer to support this IFC extension.

yes please, there are too few tools which support this. However also reading Civil 3D dwg/alignment object or similar in MicroStation .dgn is very important.

I guess we will have to wait until the official BuildingSmart release of IFC5?

I already asked this on the knowledge centre and safe responded. I added the link to the question below.

Absolutely, mission critical for our development of a virtual alignment here at FDOT. FME play a crucial role in CIM (Civil Integrated Management) - 3D geospatial data integration. I was hoping to see the IFC -alignment Reader/Writer in FME 2019. I read of the possibility in FME knowledge base a year ago.

Totally disappointing that we won't see this in FME 2019 (:

In FME 2020, it seems possible possible to read alignments already. For example, importing the IfcAlignment sample .ifc files that are included in the IFC4.1 specs (see https://standards.buildingsmart.org/IFC/RELEASE/IFC4_1/FINAL/HTML/link/alignment.htm) in FME2020 is possible.

Writing alignments is not possible yet. The log says:

IFC: Unable to write objects of type 'IfcAlignment'

I have FME 2021.03 and I cannot read the alignment that is defined in the program, there are lines that define the alignment parameters but then it does not load them. with a viewer (usBIM viewer+) it tells me that there are 292 elements and FME does not read them to me.
