At this moment the option to redirect writers to inspector is adjustable for every workspace. When working in a large project involving a lot of WorkspaceRunners calling other workspaces, I tend to forget to disable this option in some of the workspaces. This results in having to run the complete process (or at least a big part of it) again when I notice my mistake the next morning.
Therefore it would be very useful if there was a way of overruling this per-workspace setting with a global setting.

That's interesting. Does the output get redirected to the DI even if the workspace is run via a WorkspaceRunner? I wonder what happens when you publish a workspace to Server with this turned on?! Maybe that setting should just be ignored when the workspace is run via the WorkspaceRunner?

Yes the output is indeed redirected to the inspector when the workspace is called from a workspacerunner. However I have no idea how FME Server would react on this.

I always thought that the Writers/Redirect menu item was global, but can see that it is indeed workspace dependant. Thanks for the heads up :-)

Perhaps we should make it so that this setting, which is in each workspace, ONLY has any effect if you are running directly from within workbench. IF you are running in a workspace runner or in FME Server, then it does nothing. This would actually make this setting exactly like "run with full inspection" or "run with breakpoints" -- those are workbench only settings that apply to your workbench session, and are not saved in your workspace. We'd be interested in your thoughts on this. @jeroenstiers @martinkoch

I think this would prevent a lot of frustration.

I was just wondering if there are a lot of people that are using this functionality to test parent-child models. But in that situation one can always use the FeatureWriter when testing.

So I really like this suggestion @daleatsafe
Thanks, @daleatsafe

To me, putting this option on the same level as 'run with full inspection' or 'run with breakpoints' would make the behavour of FME workbench more consistent. I personally use redirect to Inspector as a method for debugging, just like the other two options.

Would be interesting to have the opinion of some UserExperienceConsystencyExpert.

Kind regards,

Martin
