We are seeing clients adopt 2016, particularly the "Always On" capability and their preference is to support the FME Repository here to support Active-Passive configuration with high-availability / redundancy on the database component. JDBC 6.0 for MS SQL Server is the currently supported spec from Microsoft.

While you're in there.... I would add my request to allow for dynamic port allocation to be used as well:

FME Server has been tested with Microsoft SQL Server 2016.

If there are any features not yet supported that you would like to see, please create a new idea in the FME Community. If any issues are discovered, please report them to our Support Team.
