Following up on my question here, I would like to know if there might be more FME users out there who'd also like some enhancements for 3D.

I am mainly thinking of full appearance support, meaning that FME should be able to deal with complex materials that include alpha maps, bump maps etc. and not just the basic texture. This is important when converting format A (e.g. SketchUp) into format B (e.g. Google KML/COLLADA), because visual information gets lost in the process, which might lead to a 3D model that simply doesn't look the same or even looks bad.

Let me be clear: I don't need full 3D support. This would take years to build and there are many programs out there that are probably more suited for the job. I also don't think that the Data Inspector should become so advanced that it's able to render these complex appearances.

What would be nice though, if tools like Grasshopper (Rhino) could work side by side with FME. It already offers a very similar user experience. If these two applications could be combined, it would become a very powerful 3D ETL suite!

About DataInspector capabilties:

While it is clear that DI doesn't need to be perfect, I have to say that it is my first (and sometimes only) choice and tool to check what I do with FME.

I have problems whenever I can write some format and not read it with DI :-(

So DI doesn't need to render everything 100%, but I need to be able to check if the feature/appearance/material carries the options/settings I need.

Regarding enhanced 3D support and DataInspector not keeping up with it.

Well I have problems with any format I can only write and not read with DI.

What I mean: DI is my first and invaluable choice for testing what I do and anything it can't handle is a break in my workflow.

So while it is OK to not handle everything perfectly I need to be able to check if what I produce with FME is what I intended.

Would love to see support for more complex textures/appearances. This would really boost the use of FME for us in our suite of tools.

There are a few GIS addons to Grasshopper but all are very limited in scope and functionality.

I think that Grasshopper's UI is extremely well-designed and pleasant to work with and It would be a dream to be able to harness FME's Powerful functionalities in that environment. I'm sure it would become very popular for creating GIS to CAD workflows.
