In FME 2017 there was an easy way to edit a Bookmark's "description". The Description is the area directly under the bookmark title where you could add more detail about what the bookmark does.

In 2018 the description is no longer easily accessible. It can still be accessed by using the shortcut key Ctrl-Enter when the bookmark is selected but there is no right-click menu option or any other way of getting at it. According to Safe, this is by design, as annotations offer greater flexibility in formatting included text but I would argue that, with a small change to collapsible bookmark behaviour, the Description field could still be useful.

The bookmark name is limited in length to the width of the bookmark and is therefore limited in the amount of information it can contain. I commonly use Bookmark descriptions to provide more context about what is going on inside a bookmark. See below (bookmark content not complete).

The collapsed bookmarks in 2018 look like this (unfortunately they don't collapse very nicely):

They should probably collapse to look like this:

It would be great if there could be an option to display the bookmark description text in the collapsed bookmark so that it's easier to understand what's going on. (ie. they should look more like my first image, above, but with the transformers and annotation content collapsed)

Thanks @nic_ran. Ctrl-enter eh, who knew! I had set fire to a small boat on a pond and waved goodbye to bookmark descriptions (viking burial style)... They are a feature I use all the time for "best practice" documentation and I feared they had gone. I vote you up definitely for making them easier to edit without this secret hand-shake to access them, though visibility in a collapsible bookmark is interesting, I agree in part but much like the default behavior in nesting of bookmarks and the availability in the bookmark navigator I think this visibility ought to be an option when collapsed. I have some bookmark descriptions that are pretty darn detailed and they won't always need to be visible until more detail is needed. Thanks again for posting!

Thanks Dave. I agree that displaying the Description should be optional. I think, to your other point about having detailed descriptions, Safe would say to put that into an Annotation inside the bookmark. Annotations apparently offer greater text formatting options over the bookmark description and would collapse with the bookmark.

This was brought up during my training course today, one of the trainees suggested the description could be added to the tooltip if the bookmark is collapsed.

Hi @nic_ran @1spatialdave @redgeographics, Very interesting discussions here. May I propose an alternative idea and see what everyone thinks?

  1. Like Nic and Dave had mentioned, The detailed descriptions can be added as Annotations within the Bookmark borders.

  2. The more brief summery of the whole bookmark can be added as another annotation which can be placed outside of the bookmark borders. This annotation will stay visible when the bookmark is collapsed.

Thanks for submitting this idea. Our product management team has reviewed it, and it isn’t on our roadmap. Annotations in the bookmarks replace this functionality.
