It's is horribly painful to have a complicated workspace running for hours (or days!) only to have it fail when the shapefile writer hits the 2GB file limit.

It would be nice if there was an option to automatically close the original shapefile and start writing a new shapefile (filename_1) when either the dbf or the shp file gets too close to the 2GB limit.

What if the workbench starts writing a new shapefile when the data crosses 1.8Gb?

Or there is already something of that sort. I know it can be done for attributes but not sure if we can do this with file size as well.

Hello,

I'm pleased to let you know the ability to automatically split shapefiles when the file reaches 2GB has been added as a writer parameter named Split Dataset into 2GB Files to the new Shapefile writer in FME 2019.2. This parameter is enabled by default and feature order is retained when the dataset is split.

Should this feature or its implementation not address your concerns, related to this Idea posting, please let us know by leaving a comment.
