FME 2016.1 has an FBX reader as of build 16475

Awesome, I'm going to check it out! :)

[edit] @daleatsafe: I have installed build 16474 but the FBX reader is not there? It's not listed in the gallery. Or do I need to install a prerequisite (e.g. the FBX SDK) to make it work? [/edit]

[edit2] Ah, I was a bit too soon! Build 16475 that was just released apparently ships with the SDK :) [/edit2]

Yes, I was tracking this today and the team advises that 16475 should be good on Windows, and 16477 will see FBX debut on Mac. Let us know how it goes.

Great news! Will there also be a writer?

Yes, it is being worked on right now. Should be in betas in 4-8 weeks, likely will be quietly released as part of FME 2016.1.1 sometime in June.

Is the reader still in Beta stage?

geosander
Forum|alt.badge.img+7

Nope, it's in the 2016.1 release and it works quite well. Note though that the reader options are still quite limited (you can only transform to world coordinates) and that there also is no writer yet. But that will all come in time I guess.. In case of the writer: see Dale's comment above. That's probably why this idea still has the "in beta" label.

It seams that it is doing a great job as we tested it. Perhaps it is time to change this idea from beta to released perhaps :)

Forum|alt.badge.img+1

Yes, the reader is released. Writer is not yet even in Beta. Probably need to split this idea...

Does anyone have or know of an example of an FBX file with a spatial reference? Is that even possible? I can't find examples for those anywhere but I do want to test how and if the "Move to World Coordinate System" option works...

From what I know, FBX does not natively have a coordinate system. What we've done in FME is optionally support "sidecar" files that might contain this. These typically would only have been produced by FME itself when it wrote such things out. In the case of OBJ files, we have options on the writer to apply a shift to the data going out so that systems that will only honour single precision floating point can still render the data correctly. But FME will optionally write out the shifts applied and the original coordinate system, so that if FME reads that back, we can put things in their place. From the FME Collada documentation:

MOVE_TO_WORLD_COORDSYS

If the value is Yes, the companion

.prj
 and
.fwt
files (having the same name as the
.dae
file) will be read in order to acquire the coordinate system and the data necessary to convert points to the world coordinate system.

Note: In the absence of a companion

.fwt
file with the same name as the
.dae
file, FME will look for a file named
global.fwt
in the same folder. In the absence of a companion
.prj
file, FME will look for a file named
global.prj
.

Thanks @daleatsafe, good to know that the behaviour is similar to OBJ and COLLADA in that case. Btw, will the FBX reader have some documentation at the next release? :)

@sander_s -- the team advises that doc will be in place in the next 2 weeks....
