Summary

Request for a new FME transformer (or suite of transformers) that automates the migration of GIS content from ArcGIS Enterprise to ArcGIS Online, including support for feature layers, web maps, web apps, dashboards, Survey123 forms, folders, groups, and sharing settings.

Problem Statement

Many organizations are transitioning from on-premises ArcGIS Enterprise environments to ArcGIS Online. Currently, this migration process is manual or requires extensive custom scripting using Python and REST APIs. This is time-consuming, error-prone, and not scalable.

Key Features

  • 🔐 Authentication Support: Secure token-based access for both platforms.
  • 📁 Folder & Group Replication: Maintain organizational structure and access control.
  • 🗂️ Feature Layer Migration: Transfer schema, data, symbology, and relationships.
  • 🗺️ Web Map & App Migration: Rebuild Web Maps and Apps by referencing migrated layers and configurations.
  • 📊 Dashboard Support: Recreate dashboards with updated data sources.
  • 📝 Survey123 Form Transfer: Migrate forms and associated feature services.
  • 🏷️ Metadata & Sharing: Preserve titles, descriptions, tags, thumbnails, and sharing settings.
  • ⚙️ Parameterization: Allow users to define what to migrate and how (e.g., filters, renaming rules).

Hi @philippeb,

After a bit of research it seems that Esri has a tool (or has started a tool?) to do this migration: https://resources.esri.ca/getting-technical/migrating-your-content-between-arcgis-online-arcgis-enterprise-or-both-part-1

I’m curious about what we could migrate that isn’t supported by the ArcGIS Assistant? And should this be handled by FME or ArcGIS Assistant?

Thanks

Yeah I knew about that tool but if we could simplify things into FME in one or two transformers I think that would be even better!

Migration between ArcGIS platforms could be only one part of a flow into FME, without having to go to AGOL Assistant or develop Python script.

I have clients that want me to push data into different environment after the tests have been completed. I think FME could save me time without doing anything!

@philippeb I’ll be closing this idea.

We had a few discussions to see how we could build this feature but it would require too much effort on our side - especially to keep it up to date with the inevitable updates and new features coming to ArcGIS over time. This feature would be best using a tool developed and supported by Esri (like the ArcGIS Assistant for example if they continue the development of it).

Thanks for the idea though, it did prompt some interesting conversations on our side!
