Often I want to copy the name of the source dataset in the reader. Easy enough with the writers but not able to be done with readers.

Do you mean copying the name of the input feature type? If so, you can enable it by activating the option "Allow reader feature type editing" in the FME Options, under Workbench - Reader/Writer options.
You'll get a warning, but unless you modify anything in the input feature type then you can safely ignore it.

Perfect. Thanks very much. Have been using this for years and never knew that option existed. :)
You should still be able to copy the text without having to enable that like you can copy text in dialog boxes in many different applications
