Currently on FME Cloud when you launch an instance you have no control about the virtual private cloud (VPC) it is launched into (we actually launch it into our own VPC).

I am interested in soliciting feedback on whether adding support to launch into your own AWS VPC would be beneficial. We have already had quite a few users request this, as for a lot of customers their first step in moving to the cloud is the hybrid cloud.

Just to propose some ideas.

  1. Allow you to launch into your own VPC in FME Cloud and then allow you to link to your VPC to ours via VPC Peering.
  2. We could allow you to launch directly into your VPC but this is likely to bring with it some limitations and additioanl configurations.

We looked at the SaaS FME cloud solution but decided it would not work for us due to the limitation to of the ability to create a IPSec Tunnel to be able to talk to our internal database. We weren't comfortable with having our data go un-encrypted across the internet.

Hi @stewartharper, how's the progress going with this idea? This is something we have been waiting to move to FME Cloud.

Hi, we are working on deploying into multiple clouds to start with i.e. Azure, Google etc.

One question, if the FME Server core was hosted by us, but we provided a way for you to easily deploy the engine component into a VPC would that be sufficient? Or would you prefer for the entire FME Server to be deployed into your VPC? We would ensure any data sent between the core and the engines is encrypted.

Hi @stewartharper,

Thanks for replying. Is any of the options immediately available? I think we can cope with having the FME server core not with us, although it does feel better to have the entire FME server in place. We are also open to options such as PrivateLink or VPC peering, as long we don't need to expose our DBs publicly.

Thanks

We have just been looking into something like this as an option for FME Cloud. VPC pairing would be a great option. I also like the idea of being able to deploy engines separately but the VPC Pairing would be super!
