We've got a customer that connects to ODBC 3.x database tables a lot and they'd be very happy to have the ability to add some 'Database Connections' for this database type. However, right now (2017.0) its not an available format in the list of options to assign a connection for.

Was it ommitted for a reason, or just forgotten?

This is a great idea and something we should look at for a future release of FME. I don't believe we have planned for this at the moment, but it makes a lot of sense. If we see a lot of interest build up here, that will definitely help to get this done sooner.

This gets a vote from me. It would allow for more regular connection and access to database formats that aren't supported with their own readers/writers.
