I would like to be able to have multiple instances of Workbench open in my Mac OS. I could use that in order to refer to other workspaces while I'm creating a new one. I often copy and paste parameters and transformers from another FME workspace. It's more difficult to do that when I can only have one window open at a time. I'm also just looking at the flow in different workspaces from different projects. I'm not always plagiarizing myself from just one workspace.

I also tend to work on more than one thing at a time. Because people in the office will ask me to change something in another workspace that I made while I'm creating a new one.

I don't know of any way to open multiple FME Workbench windows on OS X now.

Hi @bruttino, @jlutherthomas has found a way to open multiple FME windows on a Mac. She's tweeted about it here .

Thank you! I didn't know you could do that. That solves my problem. I guess it would help to have that ability as a menu option.

I noticed it is trying to translate the workbench app when opening that way. And it doesn't close the windows like you might expect. It's easy to work around that. It's just a little glitchy. I attached some screenshots.

Your input is still very helpful. I just hope that FME can make it work more like normal.

You can also open the macOS Terminal application and enter in

open -n /Library/FME/2018.1/Apps/FME\\ Workbench.app

where 2018.1 would be replaced by whatever version of FME Desktop you have installed.

You could make a simple script of this and use it as your de facto way to launch FME... just another workaround option! (And this one won't think that FME is a dataset...)

Noting that I did notice the closing window issue you identified. It's not a robust method to have two FME Workbench sessions, but it does do the job I think.

This method opened a new workbench as described by @bruttino (some issues there) but I no longer have access to named connections. The box is empty! (This is in the 2019 beta)

Definitely would like a "proper" way of opening a new instance.

My usual work-round is:

  1. Open Finder
  2. Double click on a different workspace (perhaps save a simple/blank one just for this?)
  3. In the new instance, switch to the "Start" tab and click "New"

This has worked for me before and continues to do so in the 2019 beta, but I notice that I still don't have my named connections!

Hi @tomf, using Build 19200 macOS I could not reproduce the missing named connections issue.

Please contact our Support Team so they can work with you to identify what is going on!

Apologies - the loss of named connections was due to me testing other problems in multiple FME versions at once. Very recent changes I'd made had not had time to propagate across. Sorry for the confusion. That'll teach me not to do two problems at once!

The method for opening multiple workbench windows I described works as expected.
