can we connect to sde database and create our own version in FME? I would like to automate some processes that require editing in sde but in a version so we can verify changes before posting to the default database.

The SDE writer has the option to write out to a version - https://docs.safe.com/fme/html/FME_Desktop_Documentation/FME_ReadersWriters/geodatabase/GEODATABASE_SDE_writer.htm
The SDE reader can also be specified to reader versions - https://docs.safe.com/fme/html/FME_Desktop_Documentation/FME_ReadersWriters/geodatabase/GEODATABASE_SDE_reader.htm
