Engine type UTILITY?

Hi everyone,

I just noticed in the dockerfile (version 2024.2.1-b24801) line 130 a new engine with the type UTILITY.
Does anyone know what this is for? Is it a mandatory component in the architecture?

Thanks a lot!

@juliovinicius the ‘utility’ engine type is a mandatory component of the FME Flow infrastructure. While it should not affect any jobs that you run on FME Flow (from any source, e.g. Automations, Flow Apps, etc), there would be impact to some features in FME Flow accessed through the web interface.

I expect that the development team will find additional ways to leverage this new type in upcoming releases, thereby making the impact larger if you disable or prevent the utility from running.

I noticed this too.

I haven’t seen the service log anything since it was originally set up. I can see though that it has “Successfully registered with FME Flow on host 'fmeflowcore'.”

I can only speculate what the new engine type is. My guess is that it will be announced for FME 2025 and that the initial plumbing has been put in place already. I wasn’t able to find anything in the FME

It could relate to remote engine services or it could be another engine type with a new pricing model to support specific workflows or job types.

Perhaps @rylanatsafe is able to give us a hint

Hi,

We noticed this too. Shame no information is to be found, since we have additional questions:

  • Does this engine have impact on our license?
  • Do we need to configure additional settings like we do for the regular engines?

Hi @juliovinicius , you’ve got a great eye for detail!

This engine type is designed to support internal tasks within FME. It leverages parts of the FME engine to streamline certain operations under the hood. There should be no negative impact on the performance of existing processes.

To answer the questions from @r_huesken:

  • This engine type has no impact on FME licensing. It does not introduce any new costs or require additional licenses.
  • No configuration changes or manual adjustments are required to use or accommodate this engine type in your deployments.

Thank you very much, @rylanatsafe.

Sorry, it wasn't clear to me whether the new Engine Utility is mandatory or not. What is the impact of not having it running?

Thank you @virtualcitymatt and @r_huesken for facilitating this!
