Provide the ability to rename web and database connections

I suppose the best workflow currently is to import them, duplicate them, rename the duplicate and delete the original, but I still think it would be useful to be able to rename connections.

Our development team have let me know they made a deliberate choice not to allow renaming connection names in Form. As you mention, it will break your workspaces so it is difficult by design to rename connections.

Since you’re importing connections, it may be easier to rename the connections within the exported XML file containing the named connections before importing them instead of manually duplicating and renaming. You can do this with a combination of XMLFragmenter and XMLUpdater.

I have attached an example workspace demonstrating this approach and I hope it helps.

I wonder, given it is possible to rename connections in the XML and during the duplication process, if an option could be given to rename connections on import.  If the default was the same as defined in the xml, this would give the importing user the opportunity to update it if required, but also keep it the same to prevent breaking anything.  Should be the best of both worlds.

I’ve raised your suggestion of giving users an option to rename named connections on connection import with our development team. They are open to the idea.

Are you able to create an Idea for the enhancement at https://community.safe.com/ideas? This way you can be notified when there are changes the Idea’s status, like when it is in development or released.
