Question

Plant3D Conversion

I am trying to convert a drawing from Autodesk Plant3D to *.IFC format for consumption by a third party BIM viewer. I want to bring over as much of the intelligence from Plant3D as I can (part names, etc). When I convert from the FBX, all I get are the surfaces as a part name. If I convert from the dwg, everything is still lines. Is there an established method to get from Plant3D to IFC?

Hi @smithiam1973,

If you run the EXPORTTOAUTOCAD command in Plant 3D, it will create a standard DWG file that FME can read the solid geometries from. However, I'm not sure how much of the part intelligence is exported into that file.

You may be better off with a combination of the FBX file, from which you can extract the part names, and and Excel or CSV export of the part information. You can tie these back together in FME, then export to IFC.
