lots of other Mining/Natural resource software on the ideas list worth voting up New Reader/Writer: Open Mining | Community specifically the open mining format (OMF)  proposed as a means to get around propriety formats.

OMF is currently at version 2.0-beta

The objective of the OMF project is to create a file format that allows 3D data to move cleanly between different software packages, allowing for successful manipulation and storage of that data by multiple teams with different areas of expertise.
