Hi,

I have some 3D fencing data in IFC format and I want to work out the height of the objects. I been  x,y,z co-ordinates and the ‘Bounds Extractor’. However, due to the data being long linear features and thus the underlying height of the ground negatively affecting the height. I get strange results (as fencing goes up and down underlying elevations).

I think the only method is to take cross sections of the fencing and work out the distance (height) between the highest and lowest z value from the cross section. However, this seems difficult to do. Any ideas?

Hi @couch,

It doesn’t look like there’s an immediately straightforward way to do this, but I’d be happy to help explore some possible workarounds. If possible, could you please share a bit more information so we can take a closer look?

  • A small sample dataset illustrating your 3D fencing data scenario

  • Which IFC reader/writer you’re using (new or deprecated version)

With those details, we’ll be better equipped to explore alternative methods. Thanks!

Hi, Can I email you data directly so its not on public forum?

Using this reader - Industry Foundation Class STEP/XML Files(IFC)

Hi @couch,

Thanks for following up! Since you’d like to share your data privately, please contact our Safe Software Support team. Our support team can take a closer look at your IFC dataset to help determine the best approach for measuring fence heights.

If you can please submit a ticket here so that our team can look into this further, that would be great! When submitting your ticket, please provide:

  • A small sample of your IFC data.
  • Your FME version and build number. You can check by going to Help > About FME Workbench.
  • A brief summary of what you’re trying to achieve.

Thanks again for posting in the FME Community. We’ll be happy to continue assisting through Support!
