Hello FME Community!

I’m Dustin, the newest face on the Community team here at Safe. I’m originally from Winnipeg ❄️ but now call Calgary, Canada home 🤠. Outside of work you’ll usually catch me at the gym, playing video games, or trying the newest resto in town.

First, a little extra context about what brought me here: I started out in GIS with a BSc in Physical Geography and a few years as a GIS Technician, then wandered through tech support, recruiting, and most recently communications. I’m so excited to finally bring my GIS roots and my love of communications together, and I can’t think of a better place to do it than here.

Here’s where you come in. I’m learning FME from the ground up, and I want to bring you all along for the ride!

So far I’ve finished FME Accelerator and I’m working through Integrate Data with the FME Platform. Just this week I built a geodatabase with features from multiple sources in a few clicks, and my mind was blown 🤯 I couldn’t stop thinking about all the hours I’ve spent sifting through spreadsheets and frankensteining data together to get the same result. FME and I are going to be besties in no time, I can feel it 😉

Which brings me to my question for you:

How did you learn FME? Did you work through the Academy, get thrown into the deep end on a big project, or land somewhere in between?

Drop your story in the comments! And if you’d rather just pop in and say hi, I’d love that too. Tell me where you’re joining from and what you’re using FME for. I’m excited to get to know y’all.

Up next, I’m leveling up with FME Form Intermediate and Advanced. Stay tuned, I’ll be sharing what I learn (and probably a few more 🤯 moments)!

Fellow Safer here!  I learned FME in 2020 just before the Academy was created with the previous training modules/courses.  After finishing the courses, my main focus was actually with FME Flow Automations and working my way backwards to build up FME Form skills.  My first big projects involved ArcGIS Online, webhooks, road and elevation analysis, and custom web apps.

My learning path was a bit unusual since I put much more time into FME Flow than I did with Form, but this actually did me a huge favour.  Flow got me thinking outside the realm of a single FME workspace with event triggers, chaining workspaces, and embedding workspaces into web apps.

I learned the most with projects where I didn’t know if my idea was even possible to achieve with FME, and yet I always found a way with some creativity!

My journey learning FME absolutely does NOT foreshadow that I’m part of our Customer Education team now 😅

I learnt FME during a summer co-op job. On my first day, my manager said “You know FME, right?” and I was like “...no?...” 🙀 They sent me to go watch YouTube for a couple hours to learn FME… and I used FME for the rest of the summer to do a lot of fun projects. I watched webinars and used the community to basically teach myself FME, and actually never came across the FME Academy!

Now, I create and deliver FME Flow training on the FME Academy, and hopefully help everyone in the FME community learn FME on an easier route than I took. 🤓
