I am doing my first experiments with ArcGIS Portal Feature Service Reader.

I run into some strange behaviour in Workbench with editing its parameters and wonder what I am missing out on, or if we have some problem here ...

  1. I add a reader (old style) and try to publish settings I want to keep variable.

This works well for all settings except for the "Feature Service:" setting.

There is no way to edit this in Workbench Navigator, and it is not editable in the Reader settings once it is created.

  2. I try the same with a Feature Reader (new style) and voila I can publish "Feature Service:" as a parameter. Small trap here: I can only set it to a predefined parameter and the option to create one is missing in the dialog ;-(

Problem with this variant: I can't set Search Envelope coordinates as I can do with the old style reader.

Seems like there is no way to have all parameters published I want and I need to choose which variant from above comes closer to what I need ?

Thankful for any enlightenment on what is causing these mishaps ...

Michael

Hi @mhab, thank you for sharing your findings. For the first part of publishing the Feature Service as a user parameter, one possible workaround is to create a new user parameter first (similar approach as you've tested with a predefined parameter in the Feature Reader), and edit reader parameters by clicking the reader on the canvas and choosing the third icon from the pop-up menu, then link the Feature Service under Parameters with the new user parameter. Would you like to give it a try and see if it works for you?

This works.

So what I learned new here is: There are 3 different ways to handle reader parameters.

  1. in Navigator
  2. Reader params opened by the tooth wheel (General Parameters)
  3. the "edit reader parameters" in the 3rd icon when reader is selected

All three are slightly different for the ArcGIS Portal Feature Reader which is a bit confusing ... but nice for those who like adventures and it allows to distinguish the "normal" user from the "expert" ;-)
