When can we expect Esri enterprise geodatabase formats to work on Linux also?

As I understand things, currently one can only use the Esri enterprise geodatabase formats on a Windows host. When moving to kubernetes it is then needed to use queue control to direct those jobs to Windows VMs, which is not ideal.

When can we expect those drivers to also work on Linux? And is the problem on the Esri side or the Safe Software side?

Hi @bartvde,

I can shed some light here as I’ve investigated this situation recently to see if we could revisit our attempts to support Esri Enterprise Geodatabase on Linux: The answer is a solid no as we are blocked on Esri offering native support there first.

We do really want to offer support to our users but we are just blocked at this time.

I’d suggest reaching out to Esri.

Thank you @PierreAtSafe what is the name of the Esri SDK that is not available on Linux that FME depends on for this functionality? I will reach out to Esri.

@bartvde

I can’t share the details of our implementation in this case, but when reaching out to Esri the general ask would be for native Linux support for directly accessing Enterprise Geodatabases in FME.

In the meantime, we have an article detailing a cross-platform approach that works on Linux today: you can update an Enterprise Geodatabase through a Portal Feature Service, with no Esri software needed on the device running FME:

Hope that helps!
