Python 3.5 or compatible interpreter could not be loaded

Hello all,

I am trying to use a Workspace Python Startup Script and I get the message from the subject line.

I am using FME 2017.1 on MacOS. I changed the Python Compatibility to: Python 3.5+ and I also changed the Translation setting Preferences to "Python Preferred Interpreter: FME Python 3.5+".

I am not sure if I need to tweak something in the workspace or it has to do with something it cannot find on my Mac.

Can anyone please advise on how to fix this little mishap?

I appreciate the help!

Hi @robertr

Do you have a Python 3.5 interpreter installed on your Mac? FME on the Mac won't install its own interpreter, so you may need to install it yourself. I downloaded my Python install from here: https://www.python.org/downloads/

Hello @LauraAtSafe,

Yes, I do have it installed and I guess the issue is that it cannot find it or it looks for it in a separate place.

I have let Python do its normal installation of Python3 so it should be in its default place.

I am trying to point FME to the interpreter but I did not manage to find it via "Use Custom Interpreter...". I am not sure where is FME trying to locate it and what extension is FME looking for when searching.

It seems I had the latest version installed which is Python3.6+.

Went back, took a 3.5 one and it works fine. Thanks!

Great! I'm glad to hear you were able to get this working. Just to let you know, we recently added support for working with Python 3.6, so FME 2017.1.2 and 2018 should be able to work with that Python version.

Do you mean build "17722"? As I am using Mac, that's the only update I can see at the moment.

Not sure if it's different between OS.

Yes, sorry for the confusion. I did mean build 17722 (it should be the same build for all OS's now). Also, from doing a bit more digging on that, this version of FME will work with Python 3.6.2 and older (not 3.6.3 or 3.6.4 just yet since they're new enough we haven't added support for them yet).

Got it! Many thanks for making this clear. :)

[macOS only] Please note that installing python3 through Homebrew is not supported. Please use the installers available from python.org as suggested by @LauraAtSafe.

Python 3.7.1 is not currently supported, as of this writing, for macOS FME 2019.0. Please use Python 3.6.7 instead. Our development team is aware of this and will add support – and have plans to bundle python3 – with FME 2019.0 (though as we are in the midst of the beta cycle, this information is subject to change).
