IMG Garmin

Is there a way that FME can "bypass" the native format of .img Garmin (or intermediate format?) so I can create a transparent map to add on top of an official Trackmaps in both BaseCamp and GPS?

I've never done it myself but it looks like Garmin Basecamp is able to import georeferenced rasters if they're inside a .KMZ, so the answer would be a careful "yes".

This blog post (from 2009...) describes how to do it using Google Earth for the georeferencing, if you're using FME and have geodata to input you can skip all that.

Hi! Thank you for your answer! My datas in input are .shp, so I just go directly to .kml?

It depends... .shp would just be vector information and you're asking about .img which is raster. In order to make a raster out of the shapes you'll need to run them through e.g. a MapnikStyler and assign styles to it.

What exactly do you want to map and what do you have as input?

Hi again @redgeographics! Here is what I'm doing: I have 2 shapefiles of a grid (15 min and 5 min) for our fire crews operations and I want to be able to open that in both basecamp and in a garmin gps. My goal is to create a transparent layer so we can see topography underneath. This grid looks like "GARS grid" (Global Area Reference System).

With FME, I can easily create a transparent raster with "Mapnikrasterizer", that I export as a kml/kmz. I can open it in Google Earth and BaseCamp...but I can't find a way to open it in my gps...Garmin gps just doesn't see it at all....

Here is my result in FME Inspector, (same in Basecamp and Google Earth)...and this is exactly what I want in my garmin GPS
