About the Contest

From December 3 to December 17, 2024, the FME Community is hosting our annual winter contest: a balloon race powered by FME Flow. Launch your virtual balloon and steer it around the world, scoring points for different activities.

FME is used to manage the contest - from simulating the balloon travel (using an API called Tawhiri) to providing reports to contestants during the game.

You can do as little as register a balloon and watch it float off into the distance. But, if you want to be a little more active, you can check out weather forecasts and predictions and change the altitude of your balloon to give you the best speed and direction. 

What You Can Win

We have some incredible prizes up for grabs! 

  • A Mova globe ($220 USD value) will be awarded to two grand prize winners with the highest and second highest number of total point at the end of the contest
  • $100 Amazon gift card awarded to the user with the best visualization using FME
  • $50 Amazon gift cards awarded to the fastest balloon, furthest distance traveled, and most countries flown over
  • $50 value FME swag prize pack awarded to the balloon that flies closest to the Safe Software office in Surrey, British Columbia 
  • $50 value surprise consolation prize ‘awarded’ to the balloon that lost the most points by flying over airports

DPI Ag is my balloon name as I was hoping my team at work would be involved too. Alas, they had better things on like holidays or moving back to Norway to work in the Reindeer Department!

My balloon is Team Rocket (from the antagonists in Pokémon, who often fly a balloon).  Very fun contest, but I wish Esrange (northern Sweden) was put in as a spaceport. They DO send up rockets from there...

I got my list of spaceports from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rocket_launch_sites

My filter was that it had to launch rockets into orbit (or further), and Esrange didn’t meet that condition. I left out small airports too. Otherwise the whole of Europe would be one, big red circle!

I am having this error, who can tell me how I can File a new flight plan?
 

 

Hi ​@evoteck - that’s telling you that you can’t launch the balloon again once it is already in the air. You have two different alternatives here:

  1. Use the “altitude update” command (the microphone icon) to send your balloon to a new altitude.
  2. Use the “delete” tool to delete your balloon and start again with a new balloon and a new launch.

I assume you want the first option, just to change altitude, but if you do want to start again with a new launch, the second option is the one to use.

Hi ​@evoteck! Once you’ve launched it you can leave the balloon or you can change the altitude and wind speed. ​@mark2atsafe has created this short video demo to show you what to do: 

 

Okay thank you, the video was helpful, but for the is there any other thing I suppose to with FME workflow after I have launched my balloon. Like the download options on the dashboard.. I just need more clarity on other things I have to do after launching. Thank you

My team name is “Gitter På Mitten 🏓”. We play a lot of table tennis at my office during the breaks!

I took the initial of my last name and the first three letters from my first name to name my balloon ‘gsri’. Also, the name rhymes with ‘esri’ the GIS that I integrate with other systems using FME!

We did a vote at Safe on which balloon names we liked the most. The winner is Kiwis Can Fly! See the day 8 recap video for more information on which names made our top-10 list.

​@danielleatsafe  ​@mark2atsafe My Ballon name is Evoteck, which is also the name of my GIS startup company, congrats to the winner ‘Kiwis Can Fly’ based on safe vote on the balloon names they liked the most. I no Evoteck will be attracted to Safe team when making another vote for the best GIS startup😃.
