Today I cover the fixes I made for bad reports, the latest standings, and I have a meeting in 30 seconds, so you’ll have to watch it to find out what else!
Cheers

Hi @mark2atsafe, Great game and thoroughly enjoying it! Thanks.
The report pages for the Balloon Details and the Status Report does not seem to refresh today. Also the ‘Altitude Update’ does not seem to work. May be it works but since the Balloon Details page does not refresh the Heading and Altitude details shown are not correct.
@mark2atsafe Something seems strange. I also downloaded the data to confirm. My TeamId is 353 gsri. The Team353Positions.csv does not have any entries after 2024-12-10T17:00:02.40625Z. I also eyeballed a couple of other position files and they have the latest updates.
I put together a quick workspace to analyze if the position data is being updated for all teams. The position data for the following 15 teams stopped updating a few hours back. Here is the snip of the last update for these teams. For all other teams the last update is after 202412102220.
No crashes or lack of oxygen. In fact all the 15 teams that had this issue were flying below 5000m so oxygen is not an issue. Also, no crashes as the lat long and elevations are all different and a few of them were flying over the Pacific ocean. I have no idea what could have caused this. Since my position did not update for an hour I started digging into this and downloaded data to do an analysis. I also issued a manual altitude update when I noticed this but that also did not work. However, after the last automatic command it seems to be working again and my position is getting updated. I lost 5 hours and around 800 kms but that is part of the game, I guess.
Hi @mark2atsafe , I’m keen to understand how you were able to add layer widget to the Leaflet map on the Balloon page. I was also wondering whether another layer could be added if elements of windy were vector web services…. https://github.com/danwild/wind-js-leaflet
Apologies for that, and apologies to other players.
To explain what happened: As you probably know, we simulate 12 hours at a time. If you submit a new command after that we wipe out the positions for whatever time remains (say 4 hours) and get new data from the API to fill that in.
There was a short period yesterday when a workspace failed between wiping the old positions and receiving new ones. That put the data in a bad state so that further commands wouldn’t work.
I fixed it as soon as I could figure out what was going on but, unfortunately, some balloons wouldn’t have moved during that period. It looks like yours was one.
I’m really sorry that happened. I wish I could fill in missing bits, but now the balloons have moved on it’s not really possible. Thanks for posting and letting me know, though. It’s much appreciated. I had already noticed, but if I hadn’t, your posts would have alerted me.
Regards
Mark
ps Yes, I should probably change the workspace to ensure we get data back before wiping out the old positions, but I’m not going to do it right now. I don’t want to make changes like that mid-game!

Hi
That’s been a common question. I basically point the Leaflet map to read data from a workspace/webhook on FME Flow. If Windy is also a vector web service, yes, I could easily add that data too.
I’ll take a look into that. I’m also planning to post an article after the event to explain how some of these components worked.
There seems to be an issue with the map displaying balloon routes after crossing the international date line or the 180 meridian. The map itself repeats the earth’s surface features repeatedly in both directions, and the part of the balloon paths west of the 180 meridian are showing on the repeated earth display to the left (west).
I decied to give Vatican a try, but it’s very difficult to navigate with only one command every 15 minutes and the map taking a lot of time to update your position and heading. So I made the turn too late and missed the tiny blue dot. :-(

To be honest, that’s working as designed. I wasn’t sure how to get my data to repeat across the repeated background map! The data is just on one map display, so yes anything after your cross the 180 line in the east will next appear in the west.
If anyone knows how to repeat the data in Leaflet, I’d love to know!
Do we get any extra points if we fly over our own home or office? 😁
I did think about that, particularly if you fly over the country your balloon is registered to. But then everyone would have registered as the UK or France 😆
