The reader would return all the metadata descriptions of the layers defined in a .mxd file, and the writer would take this information and create a .mxd file. ArcObjects would have to be available for this to work. Would provide for bulk operations on .mxd files, as well as creation of .mxd files in the same process as geodatabases or shape files were being created.

This would be really useful for my specific use cases as I have a lot of MXD's that are pretty formulaic and could be controlled via a spreadsheet and generated on the fly to the benefit of my users. A user in a large corporation can log in and see a newly generated MXD for them to browse the data and it will contain all the latest layers, labeling, formatting, etc..

Great idea. This would be useful for creating map outputs. So having the option to use MXD templates in both an MXD and a PDF writer would be perfect.

This might be a good option for a hub transformer as functions for this exist in ArcPy.

If it could delve into Grouped layers at the same time, that'd be even better.

Could ArcGIS Pro projects be included in this? Since one day they will be the default rather than MXDs.

@fmelizard How about making this idea "Create a Web Map Reader & Writer" so that you're not limited to ArcMap going in and coming out?

Being able to extract the layer names from an mxd would be fantastic! Being able to dig a bit deeper and get the data source name would complete what it going to be a tedious manual task.

Having an MXD Reader/ writer would benefit us with GDA 2020 conversion instead of having to run python scripts over mxds, a tedious task this will be
