This should be easy but I'm getting conflicting answers/stories. I want workbench to write shapefiles into oracle 11g in such away that arcmap can than access them (to then create an AGS REST serivce). Do I want an SDE write or an Oracle writer?

Hi,

If you have a SDE environment with oracle, then I would use the SDE writer to avoid format/environment related issues.

Hope this helps.

I need a special license for that correct? A coworker sent me a license string for it. So now I send my mac address to safecodes and they give me a lic string just for SDE writer?

I belive you need to have a different FME edition for ESRI compatability, see also the writer licencing level
