truncated geodb_metadata_string!

I have a workspace which updates file geoatabase metadata, reading the geodb_metadata_string.

 

 

This works fine for one gdb, but when I try it on a different gdb the geodb_metadata_string is truncated and missing most of the xml.

 

 

All I get is <?xml version="1.0"?>

 

<metadata xml:lang="en"><Esri><CreaDate>20140730</CreaDate><CreaTime>11460300</CreaTime><ArcGISFormat>1.0</ArcGISFormat><ArcGISstyle>INSPIRE Metadata Directive</ArcGISstyle><SyncOnce>TRUE</SyncOnce></Esri></metadata>

 

 

Ive tried using different metadata styles in arccatalog, but still does the same thing. 

 

 

Any suggestions would be welcome! thanks
