Modelling tunnels based on point cloud data

Hi, I am trying to use FME to create a model based on point cloud data (either .pts or .xyz).

The data is approximately 87 000 000 points. The result is a mesh with alot of holes in it.

Trying to use PointCloudSurfaceBuilder.

Any tips on how I should go on?

Hi @jesppant. Full disclosure, I'm not an expert on this subject, but I found an answer from one of our experts, for a similar question. Hope it helps you as well.

PointCloudSurfaceBuilder sounds like the right transformer to use. Our expert recommends using the Simple Triangulation over the Poisson. Its results tend to resemble the input data far more than the Poisson, and the settings are simpler to understand.

The key to getting a good result might be to adjust the Search radius so that the distance between the adjoining points is spanned reliably. This can take some trial and error. (I'm not sure what output format you are planning to use. 3D PDF writer is one of the faster writers for 3D mesh. So you can use it for the trial and error phase, and view the modeling outcome in Adobe Acrobat. When you get the model result you like, you can switch to your desired output.)

Once you get the surface to span, you can use the other parameters to limit the angle between adjoining surfaces in order to limit the noise in the output.
