Question

I am using file .gdb more and more but I find it frustrating that when I want to add a feature class to read from a .gdb the select process takes a very long time just to navigate through my existing folder structure to find the .gdb. Why is that?

When I add a shapefile reader or DWG reader in the same manner, it takes very little time to navigate my way to the shapefile location. I do not understand the difference. If they all took the same amount of time I might conclude it had something to do with my directory structure.

Hi @mcgregrr,

The file picker dialog for the GDB readers use the ArcGIS Select Geodatabase dialog, which seems to take time to analyze the files in each folder you navigate through to find valid GDBs. The standard file picker dialog used by other readers just filters on file extension, so it is quicker.

If I'm in a hurry, I just copy and paste the path from a File Explorer window, so the dialog only has to scan the single folder.
