How does an i3s terrain mesh replace terrain in a scene viewer?

I have created a "i3s_terrain_mesh" out of a DEM. Following the description on

this page, the terrain mesh would replace the existing terrain in the scene viewer.

In case we talk about the ESRI ArcGIS Portal/Online Web Scene Viewer, how would that work?

As far as I understood, only elevation layers can take over this job when being added to the scene.

Even turning an input into an "i3s_terrain_mesh", we deal with an SLPK, that has to be shared and published on the Portal.

In a web scene, such an added SLPK is not interpreted as a layer that can be added to the "Ground" - replacing the default terrain 3d elevation coming from ESRI.

Have you any experiences with this?

Not much experience with the i3s format so I can't help with the terrein mesh question.

But if you need an elevation layer in agol, I do this using the following steps:

DEMGenerator to generate elevation raster.

FeatureWriter GeoTIFF (don't forget the parameter "Write Esri-Compatible Coordinate System")

Drag GeoTIFF in ArcGIS Pro.

Drag to Elevation layer.

Share as web layer which results in a hosted elevation layer.

Yes thanks, I know, this works really fine.

However, this page tells that such terrain mesh could replace that terrain in the scene viewer - behaving like an elevation layer.

I was wondering how this would work....
