***Note from Migration:***

Original Title was: Read Revit (rvt) natively files without needing a Revit install (or the FME Revit Plugin)

FME cannot read Revit's RVT files directly, but via the FME plugin for Revit, one can create an RVZ file which FME can read. This means that Revit must be present and running.

Vote for this idea if you'd like to have FME read RVT files directly. And vote for this idea if writing RVT directly from FME would be of interest.

Just a quick note that Flux.io is already streaming data from Revit back to several applications and back in, so this seems to be somehow possible. It might also be interesting to have a Flux connector to/from FME!

Yes, Flux accomplishes this by having a plugin inside Revit that sends the updates as they happen. So a running Revit is still needed somewhere. That said, connecting FME to flux.io does seem to be a very worthy idea -- please vote on it if that would be of interest.

Hi @FMELizard,

I'm please to let you know that our latest FME 2019.0 beta now supports reading Revit natively! Please note that it is under technology preview as our developers are still actively working on it.

We are planning to add a variety of features to FME 2019.x, our current outline is:

  • more attributes - including schedules and shared parameters
  • more geometry handling
  • colours & transparency
  • 2D floor plan views

Try out the Revit reader and let us know what you are trying to read!

Your feedback is welcome, leave us a comment on this post or submit a report to our support team with your use case.

To: Revit reader development team.

Thanks VERY much for adding a native Revit reader to FME 2019 - HUGELY appreciated.

Some feedback / comments if I may be so bold.

Note - some comments / observations could be down to user error !!!

1. Currently under parameters "Read Coord System From File" - The choice is Yes / No.

What does this choice actually mean ? No explanation in Help.

Tried it both ways doesn't seem to make any difference.

Consider adding choices for:

a. Project Base Point Coords (Revit speak for local coord system / local grid)

b. Survey Base Point Coords (Revit speak for real world coords / recognised grid system)

If the Revit file has been set up to do so, choice (b) is the most useful - you can then start combining Revit data with other datasets more easily. I'd suggest its essential to add this / have reader pick this up automatically.

2. Units

It might be worth adding choices for:

a. Model Units

b. Imperial - Feet / Inches

c. Metric - mm

d. Metric - metres

OR

Could the Revit Reader be designed to pick this up automatically (ie use model units) ???

Currently I believe that the Revit reader assumes that the model is always in feet ???

3. Revit data types to read in:

Please add ability to read in GEOMETRY for all STRUCTURAL data types eg Steelwork / Concrete etc.

Currently it does not appear as if steelwork is read in.

...........

Thanks once again for all your hard work developing this Revit Reader

< How's the Revit Writer Coming On ??? !!! >

.............

Cheers

Howard L'

Is there any chance for Safe to provide us with a road map which attributes and geometries that you will try to read in coming FME releases? Or shall we to as @howard_l above and just make a long wish list and then hope that something will show up?

Many thanks for all the last improvements on the reader! Could you also indicate which 3rd party library you are using (if you are using one)? This would give us an indication on the road map.

Keep going with this great work :)

Hi @howard_l,

Just providing an update on the 3 things you have inquired about as we have made some major improvements to the native Revit reader with FME 2019.1.

1. There is now an explanation of the "Read Coordinate System from File" parameter added to our documentation - which you can see here. We currently read coordinate systems from 2 perspectives.

2. Units - if a coordinate system is read, we will read the units from the coordinate system. If no coordinate system is read, then we will read the internal unit system which is international feet.

3. If you are still not seeing results for Structural data types with the latest reader - either in FME 2019.1 release or FME 2019.2 beta, then please submit a case with a sample dataset and details for what you are wanting to read to us for our development team can look into adding support for it.

Hi, I have .rvt file which is created with DUB DLTM projection system, I am not to see the feature on the correct location in FME inspector, or in ArcMap after transforming the file into file geodatabase.

I can see the feature on correct location when adds the file directly into ArcGIS Pro but facing issue with FME.

I am using FME 2019.1.

Looking for a solution.
