Generic Writer questions

When adding the Generic Writer into the Workspace I dont seem to be able to select multiple formats to write to. I can only pick one.   FME Desktop 2013 Build 13263  I have public web forms now but whichever format the user picks from the drop down menu it writes to shape. Because I only have Shape writers in the workspace. So I need to replace the Shape writer with Generic Writer and have it be able to write to shape, file gdb, dxf, dgn.   https://fmeserver.ncd.noaa.gov/encdirect_extract_approach.html

Importing published parameter configuration value order

Hi,  I'm importing configuration values for a "Choice or Text" published parameter. The imported values are coming from a database and the list is fairly long.    I'd like the imported values to be sorted alphabetically but can't figure out a way to do it automatically. I tried adding an "order by" statement to the where clause, e.g. 1=1 order by column_name but it had no effect.    I know that I could manually edit the .fmw file with a text editor but my list of imported values is long and will likely need to be updated on a fairly regular basis.    Anyone have any thoughts on this?    thanks,  Nic

IGDS Version 7 text range calculation with Font Resource

FMEers,  I'm using FME2012 to create IGDS V7 symbols, from a resource file (.rsc), for example, font 85 OCT032 50 feet by 50 feet.  UORS / FT= 381  The output range block is not correct in MicroStation.  The y-extent is fine, but the x-extent is about 30% too short.     I believe this is causing FME not to calculate the correct lower-left origin of the symbol from the insertion point.  Text-nodes (type 7) appear to have the correct range block and so do "normal" text strings, type 17, font=0.    It appears that the symbols are the only things with a screwy range block.  Anyone know how FME does symbols?  Tips, tricks, suggestions for getting the right output?  Brad

Exporting ArcGIS Metadata using a List

Hi Everyone,  I just had a question regarding exporting ArcGIS Metadata using a List. We recently found this wonderful article on how to pass a list of layers to a FME Reader (http://fmepedia.safe.com/articles/How_To/Pass-a-List-of-Tables-or-Layers-to-an-FME-Reader-using-Python-Scripted-Parameters) and it works amazing, the trouble is that the metadata is not brought along with it.  The location where you normally would set metadata to come accross is where this python script needs to go.  Any help would be greatly appreciated  Thanks!

Appending new records to Shapefile using FME

I’m just curious if someone could help me or give me a little direction. I was given the task to geocode a list of addresses from an excel table and populate them on a map. That part is all good but one of the tasks in the project is to append new addresses that come in and have them update on the map. I know about creating a dynamic feature class in geocoding and just editing the addresses manually but I was given instruction to use FME to create a workflow that takes the excel files and automatically adds them to a map. I have very basic knowledge of FME and how it works.    If anyone has any ideas or insight on where I could go from here they would all be greatly appreciated.    Thanks,

Restore Repository from FFS lost Service Connections

I recently backed up my running 2012-sp1 machines to a FFS and did a update to 2012-sp4. When I run a workspace to restore my FFS to Repository I can see all my workspaces are back in the appropriate repositories.  But None of them are linked anymore to the Job Submitter service, so its like they don't exist anymore. Is there a option where I can go and re-assign them to the proper service again?  Otherwise I will need to republish all 40+ workspaces and that is just a time killer.  Thanks;  David (DEWright_CA)

Reverse engineering in CAD from point clouds

We use a lot of point clouds, a few here and there for GIS/Civil application. Our more common usage are using land laser scan in big existing plants (brown field,) place them as reference in our CAD software to do the CAD design of existing structures, equipment, etc. We then redraw what is exiting on top of the point clouds.  We can have hundreds of designers and engineers spending time re-drawing the objects on top of reference point clouds.  If we could recreate surfaces of structures and equipment, to recreate the shape of walls, beams, piping, etc. That could save use an enormous amount of time (and money)  We do have many Point clouds management software and add-ons for CAD, but always look for alternate solutions; does anyone found ways of recreating thos type of shapes efficiently from Point cloud using FME?

Schema/Attribute Validation

Hi everyone :)  I have (another!) newbie question. I'm attempting to set up a workbench whose purpose is to do attribute validation/checking between a shapefile and a feature class in an ESRI SDE geodatabase.  What I need to do is compare attribute existence and some key properties (attribute name/alias/data-type/precision/length etc) between the two datasets. If the attributes/properties are the same, then proceed with some further processing of the shapefile, but if they are different to end processing and generate a basic log-like tabular/text based output detailing the differences.  Is there a particular methodology that can easily acheive this? So far I'm struggling to understand the best way to set up a flow of transformers that collects and examines attribute properties of feature type(s) (as opposed to attribute values on a per feature basis).  Any ideas/suggestions appreciated :)

FME Write to Excel with Custom Template

I am creating a extract process and I am needing to populate a existing template from Excel with data. The main issue is the template has 4 header rows, so I need to start writing data on Row 5.  Has anyone had sucess in working with custom formats for Excel like this?

Variable Reader/dynamic Schema

Hey FME'rs  I'm struggling a little bit with using trying to build in a variable reader schema. I've built the workbench where it prompts the user for the source shape file. I received a sample of the schema but there is a good chance of a different shapefile schema being input.   I have tried working with the knowledge base but I'm coming up short. The output is a known schema I've created after the analysis.   Does anyone have any ideas?

setting extension to nothing?

Hi,  In FME 2011 I used to be able to write to a csv file with no extension (eg. "filename"). In FME 2013 it seems that I cannot do that. If I do not set an extension it defaults to .csv so the output file is "filename.csv". Is there any way to write to a file with no extension in 2013? Thank you.  Paul

FGDB Raster to 3D-PDF

I usually only work with vector data but now have a task to create 3DPDF documents for distributing to a project team.   My issue is this:  how to generate a colorized raster representaion in 3DPDF using the raster contained within an Esri FGDB. I am completely new to this process and can get it to produce a TIN from the raster, but i am unsure of how to colorize the raster and have it represented in a 3D model of the source raster. Any help would be great, thanks!

MS SQL Server Writer: Failed to parse `Date' from attribute value

I'm getting this error below:  MS SQL Server Writer: Failed to parse `Date' from attribute value `05/07/2013' for column `EAST_current'  My source is an Excel file and I'm writing to a regular non-spatial SQL Server 2008 table.  All the columns in the SQL Server table have the datetime data type.  What could be the problem?  Do you see that single tick mark in front of the 05 in the error?  could that be a literal value?  I tried testing for that tick mark character in a Testor using the Match RegEX test using [`] and \\A[`] as the right value, but the row came out of the Failed port.  So I don't think the tick mark is really there.  The source data looks like this when I view it in the Feature Inspector while the translation is running:  5/7/2013  so I use the DateFormatter to conver the month and date to 2 digits with this date format:   %m/%d/%Y  this seems like a simple problem, i just can't see it.  Sarah

Variable database feature reader

Forgive me if this question has been asked before. I don't know how to phrase it in such a way that I can find an easy answer though.  Bascially, I'm developing an fme script to QA incoming topographic data against our business rules and then compare it against our database to determine the change.  What I want to do, is have the database reader only pull feature classes from our database that match the incoming data: eg: only pull the roadsegment feature class from the database if a roadsegment feature class was provided.  If I haven't given enough information or this questions was answered elsewhere please point me in the right direction. Appreciate any help. Thanks.

Unconnected nodes and double lines in polygons

Hi, I am converting ESRI shape files into the Norwegian national spatial data format, SOSI. SOSI is very strict on overlapping geometry, double or unconnected nodes and double lines in polygon features.  I am new to FME, so I need a little help in figuring out how to collapse double vertices, how to remove "blind" nodes (nodes that are unconnected) and remove double line features in polygons.  Any suggestions?  Chris

Need to set user parameter at shutdown for next run

Hi,  I want to call same workbench again based on some feature at shutdown. I achieved this through a python shutdown script but the problem is i also want to set the user parameter for the next run. I tried but each time the workbench runs again, i takes the default value of parameter. Is there any way to set the parameter at shutdown so that next time when workbench runs it picks the value i set ? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Parameter in reader URL for an XML feed

The subject sort of says it all. I'm trying to setup a workbench process anyone in our team can run, or that I can work out how to automate.  Basically I'm retreiving data from an XML feed that takes 2 querystring variables, one has to be the current date in the format (dd/mm/YY), the other I can make static as the number of days history of events to be retrieved.  I would be grateful if anyone can advise hoe I can do this in Workbench, or if there's a method for doing it in Python (bearing in mind I'm a newbie @ Python).   Thanks.

CITYgml:'CityGML Reader: The number of UV Texture coordinates did not match the coordinates of the geometry

Hello everybody, I'm a noncertiefied FME-Greenhorn.  I will try to transfer CITYgml- Data into Microstation V8 and both, the internal MS- FME- Port and FME as Standalone, will give the Errorcode: 'CityGML Reader: The number of UV Texture coordinates did not match the coordinates of the geometry. Received '0' texture coordinates but the geometry has '4' points.'. There is some Geometry, which apperas in Microstation as single Lines (no shapes!) - but the Textures are not transfered (or not displayed because of the Elementtype?). The same Error will apear by transfer to dxf, kml, LANDxml or SetchUp- Format - without the Geometrydata as Result. So maybe the Reader will not accept the Data? On the other hand, i'm easily able to watch the Data inside Terrainview of Terratec!  Any Ideas? Best Regards tom

Command line scripting and GDB feature classes

Hi all, I'm writing a script that should run workbench once for each feature class in a File Geodatabase.  For testing purposes I created a list of feature classes beforehand that I am passing to a subprocess call using python.  I'm basically invoking the windows command prompt to run workbench once for each feature class in my list.  In my workbench I've linked the Feature Types to Read to a user parameter which I pass the Feature Class name to in the subprocces call.  I'm getting a long, weird error message back each time the process is run & the workbench is failing each time.  When testing in workbench & giving the user parameter a Feature Class name everything is  kosher.  Any suggestions from the community?  Thanks!
